Creatine Phosphokinase Test (CPK) also called Creatine Kinase Test

Here is another thing I was tested for last week when they drew my blood.  I have had elevated levels of CPK before.  Creatine Phosphokinase is an enzyme that is mostly found in the brain, heart and skeletal muscle.  If the level of CPK is very high then there is a possibility that you have damage to the brain or heart.  A common cause of high levels is muscle damage or muscle breakdown.  When your muscles breakdown due to some kind of muscle disease, such as Muscular Dystrophy...CPK is released into your blood.  This is what would cause a high amount in the blood.  This test is used to diagnose a heart attack, brain injury or stroke, electric shock, convulsions, inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), myopathy, lung tissue death, find cause of chest pain, check how badly a muscle is damaged, help diagnose dermatomyositis and polymyositis,  or to tell the difference between Malignant Hyperthermia and Post-operative infection are reasons for testing for CPK.  Depending on what specific form of CPK is high points to which muscle is damaged.  The timing and pattern of the CPK levels when they rise or fall can be important for diagnosis, especially if a heart attack is suspected.  Here are a few good articles that I found about Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK), also know as a Creatine Kinase test.
